Types of Skin Cancer Mohs Treats
Mohs surgery is a precise surgical technique used to treat the most common skin cancers. These types include:
- Basal cell carcinoma
- Squamous cell carcinoma
- Certain kinds of melanoma
- Merkel cell carcinoma
- Other unusual skin cancers
Mohs surgery is especially effective for skin cancers with a high risk of recurrence or that have previously recurred after treatment. It is also effective for cancers in areas where you want to preserve as many healthy tissues as possible, such as the nose, eyes, ears, hands, feet, and private areas.
How Mohs Surgery Works
Mohs surgery is a unique and highly effective way of treating most skin cancers. First, the visible tumor and thin layer of surrounding skin are removed. Then, the tissue is examined under a microscope to see if any cancer cells remain on the edges. More skin is removed and examined under a microscope if cancer cells remain. The process continues until no more cancer cells are found on the edges.
The primary goal of skin cancer surgery is to remove 100% of the skin cancer and as little of your normal skin as possible. Mohs surgery has the best outcome of any skin cancer surgery – cure rates up to 99%. It also has the best cosmetic result of any skin cancer surgery.
